A purpose is a reason for existence. It drives you to make decisions, take action, and work hard toward a particular goal or future. When you have a purpose, you deeply believe in the importance of your end goal, and you feel productive moving in that direction.
Without a life purpose, you might feel out of control or as though you’re going through the motions. A study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology showed that not having a purpose is linked to depression and anxiety, and that having clear aspirations, helps people set goals, align their values with actions, and find meaning in life.
Recognizing a disconnect between what you want in life and what you’re currently doing — even if you aren’t sure what your purpose will be — is a good indicator that it’s time to reflect and think about what fulfills you. Making life meaningful can increase satisfaction and motivate you to keep going.
To live a more meaningful life, reflection and having a purpose, are essential. Answering profound questions about your values, relationships, and purpose, can help clarify what is most important to you.
When you’re lost or demotivated, it’s time to look inward. Push your introspection in the right direction with the following 18 questions to discover your life purpose and to start taking steps toward fulfillment. In order for the exercise to be meaningful, answer each question with absolute honesty.
To live a more meaningful life, ask yourself the following questions:-
1 What are my core values?
What is most important to me and what principles guide my decisions?
2 What am I good at?
What skills or talents do I possess and what would others say I am good at?
3 What makes me happy and fulfilled?
What activities do I love to do and what makes me excited, fascinated, or curious?
4 Am I living in alignment with my values?
Does my daily life reflect my core values? Am I happy, and if not, what needs to change?
5 Am I making a positive difference?
What problems in the world do I care about solving? What can I offer to humanity?
6 What are my goals and next steps?
What do I want to achieve in life? What are the next steps I need to take?
7 How can I grow and improve myself?
How do I want to grow intellectually, and emotionally? What new skills do I want to acquire?
8 Who are the people I value?
Who are my true friends and loved ones? Am I nurturing my relationships with them?
9 What kind of struggle am I willing to face?
What is a struggle I am willing to experience for my goals? What is holding me back from living differently?
10 What do I most love to give to others?
Think about the activities you find most fulfilling when you are helping someone else. For example, do you love to give advice, offer compassion, or lend a hand with a physical task? Identifying what you enjoy giving reveals what you value and what brings you joy.
11 What did I love to do as a teenager or child?
Sometimes, our childhood passions provide clues to our deepest interests before they were obscured by adult responsibilities. Reflecting on past hobbies can help you reconnect with a part of yourself you may have forgotten.
12 What is a struggle I am willing to experience?
A meaningful life is not always comfortable. Psychologist Michael Lang notes that a willingness to take on challenges is key to living a purposeful life. Considering what struggles you would endure highlights your true priorities and the long-term goals you are committed to achieving.
13 What do I do where I lose all track of time?
This question is a way to identify your “flow state”—the times when you are completely immersed in an activity. These moments can be a strong indicator of what you are most passionate about and what energizes you.
14 What makes me feel really alive and energized?
Consider the people, places, and activities that invigorate you. This could be anything from spending time in nature to engaging in a specific hobby or having a stimulating conversation. Identifying these sources of energy can help you intentionally incorporate more of them into your daily life.
15 What do the people closest to me say my passions are?
Sometimes, others can see our passions more clearly than we can. Ask a few close friends or family members what they think you are most passionate about. Their answers may reveal a theme you had not fully recognized.
16 What qualities do I admire most in other people?
The qualities you appreciate in others often reflect the values you hold for yourself. Do you admire creativity, generosity, resilience, or something else? Your answers can provide a roadmap for your own personal growth.
17 What would I do if money were no object?
This classic question removes practical limitations and encourages you to imagine your ideal life without financial constraints. Your answer can reveal a calling or purpose that you may have set aside due to other concerns.
18 How do I want to be remembered?
Reflecting on your legacy prompts you to think about the kind of impact you want to have on the world. The answer can clarify your ultimate purpose and the actions you need to take to live in alignment with it.
Spending some quality time on the questions and your answers, will lead you to a better understanding of yourself and what it is that you truly seek in life.
