Learning To Trust

Lack of trust in life is one of the biggest sources of suffering.  It’s the bedrock of so many challenging emotions like anxiety and fear.  It also plays an immense role in our patterns of responding to life in ways like trying to hold onto everything we have, trying to control and needing to know what is going to happen.

What Does Unconditional Trust Look Like?

The default orientation of most people you meet is not unconditional trust. It seems like an inconceivable possibility or even irresponsible posture in modern society.  So, what does trusting life unconditionally look like?

It’s a way of being. You view the events around you as unfolding for a benevolent purpose, in perfect timing. This doesn’t mean you don’t encounter some bouts of discomfort. But any feeling of disappointment, anxiety, or frustration is very quickly overcome. This is supported by the understanding and humility that you cannot see the totality of things.   As trust grows, you are able to maintain a sense of inner peace and ease.  Working on the quality of unconditional trust is actually what empowers you to surrender fully. Without trust, surrendering to life as it is, would prove to be difficult.

How Do You Cultivate Unconditional Trust?

Start learning to notice when you’re not trusting and then work with the underlying pattern to transform the energy-information.

  • Accept, release, replace
  • Notice doubt, anxiety, etc → move from thinking to feeling → locate the energy / constriction in your body → while opening to, accepting it, relaxing into → allow the energy to run its course and replace with the intention and feeling of unconditional trust

Alternative Methods of Dealing With Doubt

  • Affirmations

Think of your consciousness as a giant reference library of energy-information. To change the composition of the library, you need to acknowledge and purify what’s there. Otherwise, unhelpful energy-information like doubt, is always going to be there even if it’s operating behind the scenes unconsciously.

  • Surrender

Everyone’s path is different so you can only experiment and see what is most supportive for you.

So next time you…

  • Aren’t sure where your career is going
  • Don’t know how you’re going to pay your bills
  • Wonder if you ever will find your partner or will die alone
  • Unsure if your health will improve
  • Feel nervous in a social situation
  • Aren’t sure whether it’s going to work out

…try to notice you are experiencing doubt! This creates the opportunity to work with it.  Take a leap of faith and surrender to the fear.

Anytime we are flopping around life like a fish trying to solve things, there’s usually doubt there. The alternative is to move towards things from a place of love, inspiration, and joy. The actions may look the same, but the inner texture feels quite different.

If you sense you’re exhibiting any of these behaviours, it could be an opportunity to pause and accept you’re experiencing doubt. This creates the opportunity to open to it and replace it with the feeling and intention of trust.  Do this every time you notice you’re not trusting and it will become a habit, a good one!

Other Things You Can Do to Help with Cultivating Unconditional Trust

  • Write down the 3 most challenging things that happened to you in the past 2 years.

What did these experiences reveal to you about yourself?   Did they change you in any way? Was there anything positive that came out of them that you didn’t expect?  What was the end result – did you cope?

The purpose of life is not to get your preferences met

Why do you think you’re here on Earth?  Your answer will determine your outlook.

My belief is that we are here to learn life lessons, to grow, to learn to become more loving, more compassionate and more trusting.

When you adopt an evolutionary viewpoint, it’s just way easier to trust life. When uncomfortable things come up, they are seen differently, no longer as threats:

  • A growth opportunity
  • Part of a bigger plan
  • Something that might benefit collective evolution versus just yourself

View trust for life like a relationship

In relationships, trust is built over time. It is strengthened by going through experiences together.

Trusting life works precisely the same way.

The process is gradual. It requires small acts of trust, taking progressively bolder steps.

So don’t get discouraged if you find yourself toiling away at trusting and feel as though you’re not getting very far. This really takes time!

Use moments and situations that you are not trusting, as opportunities. Build the muscle of recognizing these and transforming the underlying energy-information.

Life is a wise, ancient force, there is no chaos in it, it has its own time for everything.

Stop clinging to planning, to your desires, let go of control and slow down.

Just observe life:  the sunrise, the play of the wind in the leaves, the leisurely movement of the clouds across the sky. People who are in a hurry, always with anxious faces and meaningless fuss, will always miss these simple treasures of life.

And gradually, in this quiet observation, in this detachment from the fuss, you can begin to notice things that previously remained unnoticed.

You can see beauty in small things: in a drop of dew that shimmers on a rose petal, in the song of a bird, in a stranger’s smile that can light up the whole day.

So, you can feel a deep satisfaction from the very fact of existence.

As if you rediscovered the world, saw it in a new light, without embellishments and illusions.

In this state of silence and peace, you can begin to notice that life is truly wiser than we are.

And every event, every meeting and situation (even if it seems unpleasant), carries its own meaning, its role in the great game of life.

You can begin to forgive yourself for your mistakes and shortcomings. Start to accept everything that happens as an integral part of your path.

And in this acceptance, in this peace, you can discover the true meaning of life.

You can realize that happiness is not in achieving goals, but in a joyful life, in a feeling of inner harmony, in a sense of unity with the world.
