This Month’s Charity Donation: Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels was established in East London in 1964 – since then, branches have been established throughout South Africa.

The Meals on Wheels Community Services project was founded in 1964 by Doctor Denis Baird. In light of the severe need amongst the aging community in East London (South Africa), Dr. Baird launched a fund-raising project aimed at financing the first-ever Meals on Wheels delivery vehicle. He then gathered a few caring ladies, arranged to use a local church kitchen during weekdays, and the rest is history. At that time, Dr. Baird and his original team had no idea that they were giving birth to what would become an enormous miracle of mercy.

While we are very proud of the fact that our national program has reached a service level of over 31 million meals per annum, the great need in our country keeps us ever reminded that our work for the less fortunate will never end. While our national program currently comprises over 700 service points – aided by over 1400 voluntary helpers – the cries of those whom we have yet to reach keep us ever focused on our expansion plans.

With 35% of our population unemployed, and with a reported 14 million people going to bed hungry every night, we are always looking for ways and means of expanding and improving our various services to humanity.

Meals on Wheels is a multi-faceted welfare non-profit organization tasked with helping poverty-stricken South Africans with nutritious meals and food security. Our aim is a hunger-free country, ensuring every elderly person and child can go to bed with a full tummy. To accomplish this enormous feat, we’ll need all the help we can get and would love you to get involved with us…
